World Class Safaris

THE BEST KLASERIE SAFARI LODGES

There is a particular quality to a safari in the Klaserie that is difficult to put your finger on until you are there – a sense of genuine wildness, of space, of being somewhere that has not yet been discovered by everyone. As one of the largest privately owned reserves in South Africa, the Klaserie covers 60,000 hectares of classic Greater Kruger bushveld, sharing unfenced borders with the Kruger National Park and the Timbavati. The wildlife moves freely across an enormous landscape, the lodges are varied and full of character, and the vehicle density that occasionally interrupts the mood in more well-known areas is simply not a feature here.

Established in 1969 and made up of privately owned land, the Klaserie has grown quietly into one of the most rewarding safari destinations in South Africa – known to those who know, and still delightfully under the radar for everyone else.

The lodges here span a genuinely wide range – from rustic walking camps and intimate tented properties to luxury game lodges – but what unites them all is a focus on the bush itself. Game drives, guided walks, and quiet afternoons watching the waterhole are the rhythm of life in the Klaserie, and the reserve has a way of drawing you in slowly and then not letting go.

THE BEST KLASERIE SAFARI LODGES

The Best Klaserie Safari Lodges are as follows

Simbavati Waterside

Simbavati Waterside

Simbavati Waterside takes its name from its setting – right on the edge of a beautiful dam, where the constant presence of water creates a dynamic and endlessly rewarding game-viewing environment. Hippos, crocodiles, and a steady procession of animals coming to drink ensure there is almost always something worth watching from the comfort of your suite or the main deck.

The suites are beautifully designed and spacious, with a sense of connection to the waterside landscape that makes the whole experience feel genuinely immersive. Game drives and bush walks are offered daily with consistently high-quality guiding, and for those wanting a step up from the more rustic camps in the reserve, Simbavati Waterside is an excellent choice.

Authentic Kruger Safari nThambo Tree Camp (

nThambo Tree Camp

nThambo Tree Camp is a genuinely unique experience. The elevated canvas and thatch chalets sit high above the Klaserie landscape, each with a small private deck and views that stretch out over the bush in a way that never gets old. Game drives go out twice daily, and returning to camp after dark – scanning the bush with a spotlight for the eyes of nocturnal animals – is always a highlight.

The small splash pool is a wonderful spot to cool off, though the elephants do have a habit of getting there first. nThambo runs on solar power and takes its conservation responsibilities seriously. This is a camp for those who want an immersive, honest safari – no unnecessary frills, and nothing between you and the experience.

Affordable Kruger Park Safari - Xanatseni Private Camp

Xanatseni Private Camp

Xanatseni is a classic safari camp that delivers an excellent all-round experience with a quiet confidence. The spacious luxury ensuite rooms look out over fever trees and a waterhole beyond – the kind of view that makes afternoons in camp genuinely enjoyable rather than merely comfortable. An elevated deck is a favourite perch as the light fades over the bush, and the main area has several lounge and sitting areas alongside a pool and fire pit.

The two-bedroom family suite is a particularly good option, doubling as a private villa with its own dedicated guide and vehicle – an intimate and excellent choice for families wanting a self-contained experience.

Top 10 Klaserie Safari Lodges Africa On Foot

Africa on Foot

Africa on Foot is the walking safari specialist of the Klaserie, and it does what it does with real passion and hard-won expertise. The morning walks are immersive and genuinely exciting – reading tracks in the soft earth, identifying the medicinal properties of roadside plants, understanding the bush from the ground up in a way that no game vehicle can replicate. The hottest part of the day is spent back in camp, where two splash pools offer relief before heading out again in the late afternoon.

The five rustic chalets each have indoor or outdoor showers, and two can sleep up to four guests – ideal for families or small groups. The treehouse sleepout is something else entirely: a double bed under an open sky, with the sounds of the Klaserie all around you and nothing between you and the stars. The camp runs entirely on solar power, and the environmental commitment runs through everything it does.

Simbavati Camp George

Simbavati Camp George

Simbavati Camp George sits on the banks of a dry riverbed in a lush indigenous garden, and the combination of classic safari lodge atmosphere and thoughtful modern design makes it a thoroughly comfortable and characterful base. The main area leads onto expansive terraces overlooking an active waterhole that keeps the wildlife activity flowing throughout the day.

Eight luxury suites each have their own private deck overlooking the riverbed, beautiful wall murals that give each room its own distinct personality, and large bathrooms with indoor and outdoor showers. Game drives, bush walks, and night drives are all on offer with an experienced guiding team.

The Last Word Kitara

The Last Word Kitara

Perfectly positioned on the seasonal Klaserie River, The Last Word Kitara is a beautifully considered classic safari lodge that combines elegant interiors with a setting that delivers constantly. The pool area overlooks the bush and riverbed, where elephants are regularly seen digging through the mineral-rich sand in search of buried water – one of those peculiarly wonderful Klaserie sightings that guests return home talking about.

Six expansive suites each have a private deck with bush views and a full ensuite bathroom with outdoor shower. Sitting in the far northern reaches of the Klaserie – one of only two lodges in this quieter corner of the reserve – Kateka offers a sense of remoteness that even its neighbours cannot quite match.Game drives and bush walks are the focus here, delivered with the care and expertise that the Last Word name has come to stand for.

Top 10 Klaserie Safari Lodges Makumu Private Game Lodge

Makumu Private Game Lodge

Makumu is one of the most visually striking lodges in the Klaserie, and it backs up the aesthetics with substance. The elevated boma, large pool, spa, gym, and curio shop all contribute to a well-rounded stay, but the feature that genuinely sets Makumu apart is its ground-level photographic bunker – a hide positioned at eye level with the waterhole that offers extraordinary wildlife photography opportunities that most lodges simply cannot match.

Six suites are each designed around one of three South African tribal themes – Bushman, Ndebele, and Zulu – with king suites offering a bathtub with a view that makes the most of the surroundings. The attention to detail is evident throughout, and the overall experience is exclusive without feeling excessive.

Makumu exudes romance and it is the perfect place to celebrate a marriage – whether it is a honeymoon safari or an anniversary trip.

Senalala_Safari_Lodge

Senalala Luxury Safari Camp

Senalala is one of those camps that gets under your skin quietly. Set in a prime area of the Klaserie with excellent game viewing – particularly for big cats. Each room is classic and comfortable, looking out onto the grass and the waterhole in front of camp. The main area has a warm, sociable atmosphere that makes it easy to connect with fellow guests over a sundowner or dinner around the fire.

The guiding team brings real knowledge and genuine enthusiasm to every drive, and the combination of location, atmosphere, and expertise makes Senalala a camp that guests consistently want to return to.

Top 10 Klaserie Safari Lodges Baobab Ridge

Baobab Ridge

Baobab Ridge is family-run and all the better for it. There is a genuine warmth to the place that only comes from owners who care deeply about both the guest experience and the land they steward – and it shows in everything from the quality of the guiding to the atmosphere around the dinner table.

The main areas include a bar, lounge, outdoor terrace, and open-air boma with fireplace, and the swimming pool overlooks the bush and a small waterhole. Seven suites – including one family unit – each sit on a deck with views over the Klaserie, with open-plan bedrooms, generous sitting areas, and that essential outdoor shower. Day and night game drives and bush walks are conducted by experienced guides and trackers who know this reserve intimately.

Kateka Safari and Wellness

Kateka Safari & Wellness Experience

Kateka brings something genuinely different to the Klaserie and sits at the top end of the reserve’s pricing spectrum – which reflects the exceptional quality of everything on offer. Wellness is woven thoughtfully into the fabric of the experience here, complementing the safari rather than competing with it, and the result is a stay that feels restorative in ways that go beyond the usual pleasures of time in the bush.

The lodge is beautifully designed, with spacious suites and a serene atmosphere that encourages you to slow down and absorb the surroundings properly. For those who want their safari to nourish them in every sense, and who appreciate the very best, Kateka is a compelling and rather special option.

Ximuwu Lodge

Ximuwu Lodge

Ximuwu is an intimate, owner-run luxury lodge with a strong sense of place and a genuinely personal approach to hospitality. The game viewing is excellent, the team is warm and deeply knowledgeable, and the small size of the camp ensures that guiding is focused and unhurried.

What makes Ximuwu particularly notable – and worth highlighting for any traveller with specific requirements – is that it is one of the very few safari lodges in the Greater Kruger to have been actively and thoughtfully designed with wheelchair accessibility in mind. Ramps, wide doorways, and carefully considered suite layouts mean that guests with mobility requirements can enjoy a full, uncompromised safari experience here.

It is a detail that speaks volumes about the values of the people who run it, and Ximuwu consistently delivers the depth of experience that discerning travellers return for.

Klaserie Camps Misava_Safari_Camp

Klaserie Drift Camps

Klaserie Drift Misava offers boutique luxury on the banks of the seasonal Klaserie River, with views over the bushveld and an infinity pool that makes the most of every sunrise and sunset. The main area has a library, bar, and comfortable sitting areas, and spa treatments are a welcome addition after an early start in the bush.
Four garden rooms take the classic rondavel form with elegant décor and private decks, while the two river villas step things up considerably – larger, more private, with expansive decks and outdoor showers that feel genuinely special. An intimate and beautifully run camp.

Klaserie Drift Amani shares the same commitment to boutique luxury and personal service in a warm, intimate atmosphere. The suites are designed with real care and the attention to detail that runs through both Klaserie Drift properties is evident throughout.
Something exciting is also in the pipeline – a new collection of riverside suites currently under construction that, from what we have seen, are going to be quite something. Beautifully positioned overlooking the riverbed and designed to make the fullest use of the setting, they will add a genuinely special dimension to an already excellent camp. Worth booking ahead.

Top Safari Lodges in the Kruger Private Reserves

Frequently Asked Questions about the Klaserie Game Reserve

All lodges are accessed via Hoedspruit, which has its own airport with daily flights from Johannesburg and Cape Town. Most lodges are between a twenty-minute and one-hour drive from the airport, and private transfers are easily arranged. Self-driving from Johannesburg takes approximately five hours and is straightforward – no 4×4 required. A daily shuttle from OR Tambo Airport is also available for those who prefer to travel by road.

The Klaserie rewards visitors year-round. The dry winter months from May through September are generally considered the best for game viewing – vegetation thins, animals gather around water sources, and the cooler temperatures make for comfortable days in the bush. Mornings and evenings from June to August can be genuinely cold, so a warm layer is essential. The summer months from October through April bring lush landscapes, excellent birding, newborn animals, and dramatic afternoon skies. Rates are often more favourable in summer, and the bush is beautiful in an entirely different way.

The Klaserie is a genuine Big Five reserve. Lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and buffalo are all regularly sighted, and wild dog and cheetah add to an already exceptional predator list. The unfenced borders with Kruger and Timbavati mean the wildlife population is large and constantly moving – which keeps the game viewing varied and pleasingly unpredictable. Most lodges offer twice-daily game drives with night drives, as well as guided bush walks.

The Klaserie falls within a malaria area, and precautions are recommended. We advise consulting your GP or a travel health clinic before travelling for the most current guidance on prophylactics. Covering up at dusk and dawn, using a good insect repellent, and sleeping in screened or air-conditioned rooms are all sensible habits. Travellers who are pregnant or visiting with young children should seek medical advice well in advance.

Most lodges in the Klaserie welcome children, though minimum age policies vary – typically between six and twelve years depending on the lodge. Africa on Foot is particularly well suited to families with older children who are keen to walk. Let us know you are travelling with children and we will match you with the lodges that suit your family best.

All of the lodges on this list have private airstrips, allowing you to fly directly from Johannesburg with a private charter or from Cape Town via one of the three main regional airports – Kruger Mpumalanga International (MQP), Skukuza (SZK), or Hoedspruit (HDS). There is a quick lodge hop charter flight from Kruger Mpumalanga to the airstrip. Most lodges are a short road transfer from their airstrip. Many guests opt to take a private road transfer from these airports to the lodge. Self-drive is also an option for those with a sense of adventure – all lodges are accessible via well-maintained roads, and a 4×4 is not required. Speak to us about the best option for your itinerary.
