World Class Safaris
THE BEST KLASERIE SAFARI LODGES
There is a particular quality to a safari in the Klaserie that is difficult to put your finger on until you are there – a sense of genuine wildness, of space, of being somewhere that has not yet been discovered by everyone. As one of the largest privately owned reserves in South Africa, the Klaserie covers 60,000 hectares of classic Greater Kruger bushveld, sharing unfenced borders with the Kruger National Park and the Timbavati. The wildlife moves freely across an enormous landscape, the lodges are varied and full of character, and the vehicle density that occasionally interrupts the mood in more well-known areas is simply not a feature here.
Established in 1969 and made up of privately owned land, the Klaserie has grown quietly into one of the most rewarding safari destinations in South Africa – known to those who know, and still delightfully under the radar for everyone else.
The lodges here span a genuinely wide range – from rustic walking camps and intimate tented properties to luxury game lodges – but what unites them all is a focus on the bush itself. Game drives, guided walks, and quiet afternoons watching the waterhole are the rhythm of life in the Klaserie, and the reserve has a way of drawing you in slowly and then not letting go.

Frequently Asked Questions about the Klaserie Game Reserve
All lodges are accessed via Hoedspruit, which has its own airport with daily flights from Johannesburg and Cape Town. Most lodges are between a twenty-minute and one-hour drive from the airport, and private transfers are easily arranged. Self-driving from Johannesburg takes approximately five hours and is straightforward – no 4×4 required. A daily shuttle from OR Tambo Airport is also available for those who prefer to travel by road.
The Klaserie rewards visitors year-round. The dry winter months from May through September are generally considered the best for game viewing – vegetation thins, animals gather around water sources, and the cooler temperatures make for comfortable days in the bush. Mornings and evenings from June to August can be genuinely cold, so a warm layer is essential. The summer months from October through April bring lush landscapes, excellent birding, newborn animals, and dramatic afternoon skies. Rates are often more favourable in summer, and the bush is beautiful in an entirely different way.
The Klaserie is a genuine Big Five reserve. Lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and buffalo are all regularly sighted, and wild dog and cheetah add to an already exceptional predator list. The unfenced borders with Kruger and Timbavati mean the wildlife population is large and constantly moving – which keeps the game viewing varied and pleasingly unpredictable. Most lodges offer twice-daily game drives with night drives, as well as guided bush walks.
The Klaserie falls within a malaria area, and precautions are recommended. We advise consulting your GP or a travel health clinic before travelling for the most current guidance on prophylactics. Covering up at dusk and dawn, using a good insect repellent, and sleeping in screened or air-conditioned rooms are all sensible habits. Travellers who are pregnant or visiting with young children should seek medical advice well in advance.
Most lodges in the Klaserie welcome children, though minimum age policies vary – typically between six and twelve years depending on the lodge. Africa on Foot is particularly well suited to families with older children who are keen to walk. Let us know you are travelling with children and we will match you with the lodges that suit your family best.
All of the lodges on this list have private airstrips, allowing you to fly directly from Johannesburg with a private charter or from Cape Town via one of the three main regional airports – Kruger Mpumalanga International (MQP), Skukuza (SZK), or Hoedspruit (HDS). There is a quick lodge hop charter flight from Kruger Mpumalanga to the airstrip. Most lodges are a short road transfer from their airstrip. Many guests opt to take a private road transfer from these airports to the lodge. Self-drive is also an option for those with a sense of adventure – all lodges are accessible via well-maintained roads, and a 4×4 is not required.
