Sublime Sabi Sands Lodges

Best Sabi Sand Safari Lodges

Renowned for offering one of the most incredible Big Five safaris in Africa, the Sabi Sands Game Reserve forms part of the Greater Kruger National Park ecosystem. Sharing unfenced borders with the Kruger National Park, the Sabi Sands safari lodges and private game reserves are a collection of private landowners who have successfully conserved the land for generations. The results are that in the Sabi Sands you will have extraordinary wildlife sightings, including incredible leopard and lion sightings.

At any of our Top Sabi Sands Safari Lodges, you will have close encounters with wildlife of all types, who are generally relaxed and used to seeing the safari vehicles in the bush. The Sabi Sand Game Reserve takes its name from the Sabi and the Sands Rivers that run through the reserve.

The Sabi Sands consistently delivers some of the finest safari experiences in Africa – and the lodges reflect that completely. Quality here is not just high, it is extraordinary, which is why we simply cannot pick a favourite. We have grouped our Best Luxury Lodges in Sabi Sand Game Reserve by family where it makes sense – Londolozi Private Game Reserve, for example, has five outstanding camps to choose from, MalaMala has three, and the Sabi Sabi family offers four distinct lodges each with its own personality. Some collections are simply so exceptional that we have listed more than one.

All of these lodges have private airstrips just minutes away, allowing you to fly directly from Johannesburg, Kruger Mpumalanga, or any other airstrip in the region. If you prefer to drive yourself or arrive via one of the main airports – Kruger Mpumalanga (MQP), Skukuza (SZK), or Hoedspruit (HDS) – private transfers are easily arranged to get you to your lodge in comfort.

There is no particular order to our Top Sabi Sands Safari Lodges – each one earns its place for its own reasons.

Once you arrive at any of these lodges, almost everything is taken care of. All your meals, twice-daily game drives and guided bush walks, local alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, and in many cases top-shelf drinks too. Park fees are charged separately but will be included in any package we put together for you.

Ulusaba Safari Lodge

Ulusaba Game Reserve

Ulusaba is Sir Richard Branson’s private game reserve in the Sabi Sands, and the attention to detail here is exceptional throughout.
The reserve offers two very different lodge experiences – Ulusaba Rock Lodge, which sits dramatically atop a rocky outcrop with panoramic views over the bush, and Ulusaba Safari Lodge, set at ground level right in the heart of the wilderness.
Guests staying at either main lodge are welcome to visit the other for a meal, which is a lovely touch that adds variety to a longer stay. After dark, head up to the observatory and spend time at the telescope – on a clear Sabi Sands night, the sky is something else entirely.

All rooms across the reserve are being completely refurbished, with a stunning new look across every suite. Ulusaba is set to reopen in April 2027 – if you have been thinking about booking, this is the perfect moment to plan ahead and experience the reserve completely reimagined.

Explore Travel Africa-Cape Town and Silvan Safari-Silvan Safari Lodge

Silvan Safari Lodge

Silvan Safari is one of the most design-forward lodges in the Sabi Sands. Each suite takes its name and its design inspiration from a specific tree, so every space feels distinct and carefully considered. The wraparound decks and private plunge pools are generous in size, and there is a media room for post-game drive photo processing — something serious wildlife photographers will appreciate. The food here is a real drawcard, with cuisine that regularly draws praise from guests long after they have returned home.

Silvan sits within a private concession in the Sabi Sands, which means fewer vehicles in the bush and a more exclusive game-viewing experience. The ranger and tracker team are exceptional, and the lodge’s intimate size — just nine suites — means the service feels genuinely personal from the moment you arrive. It is the kind of place where everything has been thought through, and that care shows.

Elephant Plains Game Lodge

Elephant Plains holds its own in impressive company. As one of the most accessible price points in the Sabi Sands, it attracts guests who want the real deal – excellent game viewing, genuine bush atmosphere, and comfortable accommodation – without the premium rates that some of the more famous names command.

The fact that it is owner-run makes a real difference; there is a warmth and personal touch here and with just twenty-four guests at any one time, you are never just a room number.

The lodge offers a good range of accommodation to suit different budgets and preferences. The rondavels sit in established gardens that feel rooted in the original spirit of the bush camp, while the open-plan suites are a step up in space and luxury, each with a private deck overlooking the riverbed where the wildlife activity can be surprisingly good.

The Manyeleti honeymoon suite is the standout – glass-fronted, private, and complete with its own splash pool and daybed. A spa, gym, and pool round out the facilities, and babysitting is available for families travelling with young children.

Arathusa Safari Lodge

Arathusa is one of those lodges that feels exactly right from the moment you arrive. Built from natural materials that sit comfortably in the surrounding bush, it has an open, unhurried atmosphere where the focus is firmly on the experience rather than the trappings. The main living area is genuinely inviting – whether you are watching the waterhole from a quiet corner, catching up on a book, or swapping stories with fellow guests over a sundowner, the warmth of the place draws you in.

The infinity pool overlooks the waterhole and is one of the better spots in the Sabi Sands for watching wildlife while staying cool on a hot afternoon. Evenings in the boma, with a fire going and the sounds of the bush all around, are memorable in the way that only Africa can manage.

The nine classic thatched rooms are comfortable and elegantly simple, each with an en-suite bathroom, outdoor shower, and a verandah looking out over the dam. Natural fabrics, classic interiors, and all the practical amenities you need – including a minibar, air conditioning, and mosquito nets – make for a relaxed and unpretentious stay. For those wanting a little more privacy and space, the four luxury rooms are set further from the main camp, each with its own plunge pool and lounge area.

Simbambili Game Lodge

Simbambili Game Lodge

Simbambili sits in the northern part of the Sabi Sands, an area with a well-earned reputation for exceptional game viewing and prolific leopard sightings. The lodge is set among old Knobthorn and Jackalberry trees, and the main area overlooks a waterhole that makes it genuinely difficult to pull yourself away – elephants coming down to drink or warthogs playing in the mud have a way of keeping you firmly in your chair.

One of the things that sets Simbambili apart is the people. Managers and hosts Mike and Tania Cowden have been here for well over a decade, and that continuity shows in a team that is warm, attentive, and genuinely proud of what they have built.
The nine suites each have a private deck, plunge pool, and shaded sala bed, while the Honeymoon and Waterhole suites offer more space and seclusion for couples.
The food is a real highlight – seasonal produce, elegant dinners, boma barbecues, and a pizza oven that has quietly become a guest favourite. A spa, gym, and guiding team with serious bush knowledge round out what is a very complete safari experience.

Singita Boulders Lodge

Singita Boulders Lodge is one of those places that simply takes your breath away. The game viewing in this concession is outstanding, backed by a guiding team that is widely considered among the best in the Sabi Sands. Subtle layers of luxury make each suite a genuinely tranquil haven. And then there is the wine cellar – an award-winning collection that makes sundowners something to look forward to every single evening.

Singita Ebony

Children of all ages are welcome here, making it a great choice for families. For groups or those celebrating a special occasion, the exclusive-use Chitwa House is available with its own private butler and dedicated ranger.

The dam itself is a constant source of wildlife activity — hippo are resident, crocodile make occasional appearances, and the birdlife around the water’s edge is exceptional, adding a dimension to the game viewing that purely bush-facing lodges simply cannot offer.

andBeyond Tengile River Lodge

andBeyond Tengile River Lodge is one of the more recent additions to the Sabi Sands and has quickly established itself as one of the finest. The opulent suites all have panoramic views over the Sand River, each with a private lap pool, sunken lounge, and spacious deck. The guiding here is exceptional — andBeyond is known across Africa for the quality of its rangers, and Tengile is no exception. The Safari Shop carries locally sourced artwork for those looking to take something meaningful home, and there is a massage area and gym for between-drive downtime.

Tengile is also particularly strong on sustainability, with andBeyond’s broader conservation commitments woven into the day-to-day operation of the lodge – something that matters increasingly to travellers who want their safari to give something back.

Inyati Game Lodge

Inyati Game Lodge

Inyati is a classic Sabi Sands lodge with a loyal following, and it is easy to understand why. Set on the banks of the Sand River, the location alone is exceptional – the guest areas overlook the riverbed directly, and the verandah looks out over riverine vegetation that is prime habitat for elephant and hippo.

Leopard sightings at Inyati are genuinely regular, and the unfenced border with Kruger means the diversity of wildlife moving through is remarkable.

The lodge’s chalets are each air-conditioned with en-suite bathrooms and all the comfort you need after a long morning in the bush. The main area has a warm, classic feel – the Warthog Hollow bar, a library, a walk-in wine cellar, and a gym are all on hand for downtime between drives. Evenings in the traditional Shangaan boma are genuinely memorable, with a fire crackling, good food and wine, and the sounds of the African night closing in around you. It is the kind of safari experience that feels timeless, and guests tend to come back.

Idube Game Lodge

Idube Game Lodge

Idube Game Lodge has long been a favourite in the Sabi Sands, and a recent major refurbishment has taken it to another level entirely. Every room now has its own private pool, which is a wonderful addition to what were already comfortable and well-appointed suites.
The lodge is set in beautiful, established gardens that give it a sense of tranquillity and seclusion. The thatched bar, café-style patio and fire pit provide welcoming spaces to gather, while the new wine cellar, upgraded dining areas and extended pool deck are great spots to relax and enjoy the surroundings from.

The game viewing in this part of the reserve is consistently excellent. If you have stayed at Idube before, it is well worth a return visit – and if you have not, now is a very good time to come.

Cheetah Plains

Cheetah Plains

Cheetah Plains takes a completely different approach to the traditional safari lodge. The property operates as a series of exclusive, opulent and absolutely stunning Plains Houses, each with an open-plan lounge, dining, and bar space alongside a media room and wine room.
Each house has four standalone bedrooms, all with private lounges and en-suite bathrooms that open directly to the outdoors. A boma area, expansive terrace, and heated pool complete the picture.

Nottens Bush Camp

Nottens Bush Camp

Nottens is one of those special, understated lodges that real safari lovers tend to seek out. The classic, elegant suites have lovely views over the bush and both indoor and outdoor showers, and the walking safaris are a genuine highlight – offering a perspective on the Sabi Sands landscape that a game vehicle simply cannot give you. Nkhorho Bush Lodge

Nkhorho Bush Lodge is one of those quietly impressive lodges that delivers a genuinely rewarding Sabi Sands experience. Frequently Asked Questions about the Sabi Sands

The honest answer is that the Sabi Sands is excellent year-round, and the “best” time really depends on what you are hoping to see and how you prefer the conditions. The dry winter months from May through September are generally considered peak safari season – the vegetation thins out, animals gather around water sources, and game viewing becomes particularly focused and productive. Temperatures are mild and comfortable during the day, though mornings and evenings can be cold, especially June to August.

The green summer season from October through April is equally rewarding in different ways. This is when the Sabi Sands is at its most lush and beautiful, migratory birds arrive in abundance, and newborn animals are common. Game viewing remains excellent – the animals are still there, just a little more spread out. Summer brings afternoon thunderstorms, which are dramatic and brief, and temperatures are warmer. Many families prefer the summer months, and rates are often more favourable.

The Sabi Sands is among the best Big Five destinations in Africa. Leopard sightings here are legendary and genuinely frequent. Lion, elephant, buffalo, and rhino are all seen regularly, and wild dog sightings are an increasingly exciting feature of the reserve. Cheetah, hyena, giraffe, zebra, and exceptional birdlife add to an already impressive list. Most lodges go out on two game drives per day – one at dawn and one in the late afternoon – with night drives offering the chance to spot nocturnal species.

The Sabi Sands falls within a low-to-moderate malaria risk area. While the risk is real, it is generally considered manageable with precautions, and many thousands of visitors travel here each year without any issue. We recommend consulting your GP or a travel health clinic before your trip for the most up-to-date advice on prophylactics. Using insect repellent, covering up at dawn and dusk, and sleeping in air-conditioned or screened rooms are all good habits to form. Children and pregnant travellers should take particular care and discuss options with a medical professional.

Policies vary by lodge. Several lodges on this list welcome children of all ages – including Chitwa Chitwa, Sabi Sabi Bush Lodge, and MalaMala Main Camp. Others have a minimum age, typically eight to twelve years old, to ensure the experience is right for everyone. If you are travelling with young children, let us know and we will match you with the most suitable lodges for your family.

All of the lodges on this list have private airstrips, allowing you to fly directly from Johannesburg with a private charter or from Cape Town via one of the three main regional airports – Kruger Mpumalanga International (MQP), Skukuza (SZK), or Hoedspruit (HDS). There is a quick lodge hop charter flight from Kruger Mpumalanga to the airstrip. Most lodges are a short road transfer from their airstrip. Many guests opt to take a private road transfer from these airports to the lodge. Self-drive is also an option for those with a sense of adventure – all lodges are accessible via well-maintained roads, and a 4×4 is not required.
