Sublime Sabi Sands Lodges
Best Sabi Sand Safari Lodges
Renowned for offering one of the most incredible Big Five safaris in Africa, the Sabi Sands Game Reserve forms part of the Greater Kruger National Park ecosystem. Sharing unfenced borders with the Kruger National Park, the Sabi Sands safari lodges and private game reserves are a collection of private landowners who have successfully conserved the land for generations. The results are that in the Sabi Sands you will have extraordinary wildlife sightings, including incredible leopard and lion sightings.
At any of our Top Sabi Sands Safari Lodges, you will have close encounters with wildlife of all types, who are generally relaxed and used to seeing the safari vehicles in the bush. The Sabi Sand Game Reserve takes its name from the Sabi and the Sands Rivers that run through the reserve.
The Sabi Sands consistently delivers some of the finest safari experiences in Africa – and the lodges reflect that completely. Quality here is not just high, it is extraordinary, which is why we simply cannot pick a favourite. We have grouped our Best Luxury Lodges in Sabi Sand Game Reserve by family where it makes sense – Londolozi Private Game Reserve, for example, has five outstanding camps to choose from, MalaMala has three, and the Sabi Sabi family offers four distinct lodges each with its own personality. Some collections are simply so exceptional that we have listed more than one.
All of these lodges have private airstrips just minutes away, allowing you to fly directly from Johannesburg, Kruger Mpumalanga, or any other airstrip in the region. If you prefer to drive yourself or arrive via one of the main airports – Kruger Mpumalanga (MQP), Skukuza (SZK), or Hoedspruit (HDS) – private transfers are easily arranged to get you to your lodge in comfort.
There is no particular order to our Top Sabi Sands Safari Lodges – each one earns its place for its own reasons.
Once you arrive at any of these lodges, almost everything is taken care of. All your meals, twice-daily game drives and guided bush walks, local alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, and in many cases top-shelf drinks too. Park fees are charged separately but will be included in any package we put together for you.

Frequently Asked Questions about the Sabi Sands
The honest answer is that the Sabi Sands is excellent year-round, and the “best” time really depends on what you are hoping to see and how you prefer the conditions. The dry winter months from May through September are generally considered peak safari season – the vegetation thins out, animals gather around water sources, and game viewing becomes particularly focused and productive. Temperatures are mild and comfortable during the day, though mornings and evenings can be cold, especially June to August.
The green summer season from October through April is equally rewarding in different ways. This is when the Sabi Sands is at its most lush and beautiful, migratory birds arrive in abundance, and newborn animals are common. Game viewing remains excellent – the animals are still there, just a little more spread out. Summer brings afternoon thunderstorms, which are dramatic and brief, and temperatures are warmer. Many families prefer the summer months, and rates are often more favourable.
The Sabi Sands is among the best Big Five destinations in Africa. Leopard sightings here are legendary and genuinely frequent. Lion, elephant, buffalo, and rhino are all seen regularly, and wild dog sightings are an increasingly exciting feature of the reserve. Cheetah, hyena, giraffe, zebra, and exceptional birdlife add to an already impressive list. Most lodges go out on two game drives per day – one at dawn and one in the late afternoon – with night drives offering the chance to spot nocturnal species.
The Sabi Sands falls within a low-to-moderate malaria risk area. While the risk is real, it is generally considered manageable with precautions, and many thousands of visitors travel here each year without any issue. We recommend consulting your GP or a travel health clinic before your trip for the most up-to-date advice on prophylactics. Using insect repellent, covering up at dawn and dusk, and sleeping in air-conditioned or screened rooms are all good habits to form. Children and pregnant travellers should take particular care and discuss options with a medical professional.
Policies vary by lodge. Several lodges on this list welcome children of all ages – including Chitwa Chitwa, Sabi Sabi Bush Lodge, and MalaMala Main Camp. Others have a minimum age, typically eight to twelve years old, to ensure the experience is right for everyone. If you are travelling with young children, let us know and we will match you with the most suitable lodges for your family.
All of the lodges on this list have private airstrips, allowing you to fly directly from Johannesburg with a private charter or from Cape Town via one of the three main regional airports – Kruger Mpumalanga International (MQP), Skukuza (SZK), or Hoedspruit (HDS). There is a quick lodge hop charter flight from Kruger Mpumalanga to the airstrip. Most lodges are a short road transfer from their airstrip. Many guests opt to take a private road transfer from these airports to the lodge. Self-drive is also an option for those with a sense of adventure – all lodges are accessible via well-maintained roads, and a 4×4 is not required.
