A Safari lover’s paradise

THE BEST THORNYBUSH RESERVE SAFARI LODGES

The Thornybush Private Game Reserve is an exceptional destination located within the Greater Kruger area of South Africa, sharing fenceless borders with the Timbavati, and the Greater Kruger Park,  – which means the wildlife moves freely and the game viewing is extraordinary. Lions, leopards, elephants, buffalo, and rhino are all resident here, along with an exceptional supporting cast of predators, plains game, and over 280 bird species. It is a reserve that rewards return visits, and the quality and variety of its lodges is one of the main reasons guests keep coming back.

Renowned for its incredible wildlife diversity, stunning landscapes, and luxurious accommodations, Thornybush offers an unforgettable safari experience. The area is a diverse range of open savannah woodlands, thorny thickets, plains and dense riverine forests with annual rivers and dams.

One of the standout features of Thornybush Private Game Reserve is its collection of exquisite luxury safari lodges. These lodges are designed to provide guests with the utmost comfort and an immersive experience in the heart of the African wilderness. Each lodge boasts elegant and spacious suites or chalets, often equipped with private plunge pools like at Shumbalala and Saseka, outdoor showers, and private decks overlooking the surrounding bushveld. The lodges also offer world-class amenities such as gourmet dining, spa facilities, and attentive service, ensuring that guests have a truly indulgent stay. There are lodges to suit all travellers in Thornybush and we have listed them below.

The reserve is easily reached – a short flight from Johannesburg into Hoedspruit, or a comfortable private road transfer – and can be visited year-round. The dry season from July through to November is particularly spectacular, when the thinning bush draws animals to the waterholes and rivers and game viewing reaches its peak intensity.

Here is our guide to the finest lodges Thornybush has to offer.

Saseka Tented Camp

The Best Thornybush Safari Lodges are as follows

Monwana

Monwana has been rebuilt from the ground up in recent years and the result is one of the most beautiful lodges in Thornybush – light, airy, and full of the personal touches that only come when owners are genuinely invested in every detail. The main areas and fire pit overlook the seasonal Monwana River, and the active waterhole in front of the lodge draws a steady procession of visitors throughout the day.

Each suite has a private deck, lounge area, and heated plunge pool, with spacious, stunning bathrooms. For families or small groups, the private villas offer an exclusive experience with their own guide, vehicle, private main area, and kitchen – a safari within a safari. Monwana is intimate, beautifully considered, and thoroughly deserving of its place among Thornybush’s finest.

Shumbalala Game Lodge

Enviably positioned in the central section of Thornybush, overlooking both an active waterhole and the seasonal Monwana River, Shumbalala delivers a classically luxurious safari experience in a setting that feels genuinely private.
Warm wood tones, meticulous attention to detail, and an outstanding guide and tracker team define the experience here.

The four elegantly appointed suites each have a private plunge pool and deck, a fireplace for cooler evenings, open views to the bush or the waterhole, and a full bathroom with outdoor shower. The Presidential Suite – a two-bedroom villa with a large lounge, dining area, and its own outdoor fire pit – is perfect for families or two couples travelling together.
The wine list, drawn exclusively from South Africa’s finest farms, is genuinely impressive, and it is not unusual to find a nyala buck trimming the lawns between courses.

Saseka Tented Camp

Nestled under a riverine forest along the Monwana River, Saseka is one of those camps that surprises you the moment you arrive. The entrance and main areas are built across a series of tiered decks beneath a canopy-inspired roof, overlooking the dry river bed – beautiful, theatrical, and entirely at home in the bush.
Most meals are served here, and evenings around the boma fire under the Thornybush sky are a highlight of any stay.

The tents themselves are spread through a wild garden and are genuinely luxurious – floor-to-ceiling glass doors, a private plunge pool with lounger, a wrap-around deck, a freestanding bath, and both indoor and outdoor showers.
It is a camp that manages to feel both intimate and spacious at the same time, which is a harder balance to strike than it sounds.

Waterbuck Game Lodge

Tucked into the southern section of Thornybush and beautifully positioned overlooking a large dam, Waterbuck is an intimate lodge with genuine character. The main area has a welcoming lounge and dining room with a large fireplace, and the deck and bar look out over the pool, gardens, and the dam – which regularly plays host to hippos and a remarkable variety of wildlife coming to drink.

The four rooms are spread through the lush surrounding forest, each perfectly positioned for privacy. Rooms are air-conditioned with fantastic bush-facing decks, comfortable sitting areas, and ensuite bathrooms with outdoor showers. The guides here are particularly good with children, making Waterbuck a quiet favourite for families looking for something a little less formal.

Shimungwe Lodge

Named after the Bateleur eagle, Shimungwe is a welcoming homestead-style lodge on the banks of the seasonal Timbavati River in the southern section of Thornybush. The surrounding area is richly vegetated and botanically interesting – a landscape of dense trees and diverse flora that feels distinct from other parts of the reserve and the main areas are shaded by big trees, perfect for those hot summer months.

The main area has an indoor lounge with fireplace, a deck with dining and sitting spaces, a pool, and a fire pit perfectly suited to alfresco dinners under the stars. A small waterhole on the opposite bank draws animals in the dry season, and the river itself provides a constant source of wildlife theatre.
The four rooms are well considered – air-conditioned, with full bathrooms, outdoor showers, and private decks that look directly onto the dry river bed. Shimungwe is a particularly rewarding destination in the summer months, when migratory birds arrive to fill the trees.

Thornybush Game Lodge

One of the original lodges in the reserve and still one of the best, Thornybush Game Lodge combines contemporary elegance with genuine African character. The beautifully appointed chalets have striking interiors, private decks, and a main area that centres on a stunning swimming pool and a classic boma where evenings take on a warmth and camaraderie that guests consistently remember long after they leave.

The guiding here is excellent – knowledgeable, passionate rangers and trackers who are particularly gifted with younger guests, turning game drives into genuinely educational adventures.

The newly built Kamara House is a superb addition: three gorgeous bedrooms with a fire pit, private pool, and expansive lounge and dining area, served by a private guide, vehicle, and chef. An ideal choice for families or small groups seeking something exclusive and entirely their own.

Siviti

In the southern section of Thornybush along the banks of the seasonal Timbavati River, Siviti is a beautiful lodge with a distinctive sense of scale and openness. The rim flow pool – often visited by thirsty elephants, which is as extraordinary as it sounds – overlooks the surrounding Timbavati Plains, and the main areas offer both indoor and outdoor dining, including a boma for evening meals. A gym and spa treatments are available for those who want them.

The Timbavati Suites are elegant and spacious, with floor-to-ceiling glass doors opening onto private decks and plunge pools. The bathrooms are exceptional – a bathtub with panoramic views through a glass enclosure that opens fully to the bush is the kind of detail you remember.

The Timbavati Villa offers two bedrooms with a shared deck, lounge, private pool, and fire pit. For groups or families, the Timbavati Homestead comprises four spacious ensuite bedrooms, multiple lounge areas, a bar, kitchen, and pool – available fully catered or self-catering, with a private guide, tracker, and vehicle.

Serondella

Newly renovated and thoroughly contemporary, Serondella overlooks an active waterhole in a beautiful section of Thornybush and is one of the reserve’s most family-friendly addresses. The main area sprawls across a generous deck with a swimming pool, multiple sitting areas, and direct views to the waterhole and a dry river bed. A gym and spa ensure there is something to do in the quiet hours between game drives.

The accommodation spans several styles. Private suites are beautifully designed for couples – each with a striking outdoor bath and a deck overlooking the waterhole. Family suites offer two bedrooms, a shared living area, a private kitchen, outdoor deck, and plunge pool. And for larger multigenerational groups, Willem’s Den is a self-contained three-bedroom suite with its own kitchen, lounge, private garden, verandah, boma, and plunge pool – a home in the bush in the fullest sense.

KwaMbili Game Lodge

KwaMbili Safari Lodge

Not every traveller is looking for a plunge pool and a four-poster bed, and KwaMbili is a refreshing reminder that some of the most memorable safari experiences happen at a more modest scale. This small, family-owned lodge has built a loyal following on the strength of its personal service, exceptional guiding, and a genuine warmth that larger properties can rarely replicate.

KwaMbili – which means “Place of Two” in the local Shangaan language – offers comfortable air-conditioned chalets and spacious safari tents under thatch, all with private patios and ensuite facilities. The camp is unfenced, so wildlife wanders freely through the property, and the game viewing hide overlooking the permanent waterhole is a quietly addictive way to spend an afternoon. Two of the chalets have interleading doors, making them ideal for families. Game drives and bush walks are conducted by knowledgeable rangers and trackers who consistently draw outstanding reviews.

Royal Malewane’s Luxury Lodges

Malewane Lodge

Malewane Lodge is where it all began – the original Biden family holiday home, converted in 1999 into the first lodge of what would become one of Africa’s great safari collections. Classic and traditional in style, it has six luxury suites and two two-bedroom Royal Suites, all with private plunge pools, fireplaces, and views over the bush and an active waterhole. Africa House – a six-bedroom exclusive-use villa with carved four-poster beds, silk furnishings, and Persian rugs – is available for groups seeking complete privacy. The lodge’s spa, Waters of Royal Malewane, has been voted Best Safari Spa in Africa, and the wine cellar and library complete an atmosphere of deeply considered, unhurried luxury.

Farmstead at Royal Malewane

The Farmstead sits a short distance from the Main Lodge and offers a more contemporary, homestyle feel – rustic elements and natural textures coming together in a setting that manages to feel both relaxed and exceptionally refined. Three Luxury Farm Suites each have a spacious ensuite bedroom, indoor and outdoor showers, and a private pool on a beautiful deck overlooking the bush. The Farmhouse is a three-and-a-half-bedroom exclusive-use villa with a private chef, butler, housekeeper, ranger, and tracker – ideal for families or groups who want the full Royal Malewane experience entirely to themselves.

Waterside at Royal Malewane

Waterside is a visually striking member of the Royal Malewane family. Set among fever trees on the banks of its own private waterhole, it makes a bold design statement – jewel-toned rugs, vibrant colour, and a luminous, confident aesthetic that feels unlike anything else in Thornybush. The lodge accommodates up to 16 guests across four Luxury Suites, two Aloe Rooms, and the two-bedroom Baobab Suite. Facilities include the Reflections Spa, a hammam, gym, yoga room, and wine cellar. Children of all ages are warmly welcomed throughout.

Royal Malewane Masiya's Camp

Masiya’s Camp at Royal Malewane

Masiya’s Camp offers a romantic tented safari experience. Named after legendary master tracker Wilson Masiya, the camp offers a classic safari atmosphere with just six luxury tented suites, warm hospitality and some of the finest guiding in Africa.

Each spacious tented suite opens onto a private wooden deck with a heated plunge pool and views over the surrounding bush. The interiors blend vintage safari style with colourful textiles and handcrafted furnishings, while indoor and outdoor showers and generous living space create a relaxed and elegant retreat in the wilderness.
