Wild, Iconic, Untamed
CLASSIC HWANGE SAFARI
Spend six unforgettable nights on the Classic Hwange Safari, immersing yourself in the diverse landscapes of Hwange National Park—from the rugged terrain of the north to the open pans and forested stretches of the south. Nestled south of the iconic Victoria Falls and bordering Botswana, Hwange is Zimbabwe’s largest national park, celebrated for its remarkable array of wildlife and bird species. Here, you’ll encounter massive elephant herds, as well as lions, leopards, cheetahs, and rhinos, with the chance to spot rare species like painted dogs.
Visit during the dry season (July to October) to witness impressive gatherings around the park’s waterholes, or explore during the lush green season, when the landscape transforms and a new dynamic of wildlife viewing unfolds. This safari truly offers an incredible experience year-round. For an extended adventure, add on a northern journey to the breathtaking Mana Pools National Park or the scenic shores of Lake Kariba.
Operated by Machaba Safaris, this trip reflects their commitment to eco-conscious design, outstanding hospitality, and expert guiding. Machaba’s camps blend into the landscape while preserving its natural beauty, ensuring an exceptional and sustainable safari experience.
Verney’s Camp is open all year round and is particularly lush and pretty in the green season, with water in all the pans and migratory birds around. Deteema Springs is not open so we would suggest a 4 night stay at Verney’s from December until April.

Day by Day itinerary
Days 01 to 04 – Deteema Springs Camp
You will fly from Victoria Falls Airport to the local airstrip and drive into camp with your guide. Located in the northern section of Hwange, Deteema Springs is an intimate tented safari camp, set amongst granite boulders and mopane trees. On one side of the camp is a seep – a collection of springs – and on the other a dam, attracting animals throughout the day and night to drink. It is not uncommon to see herds of elephants flock past and wild dogs are found in this area. Explore the area on game drives with experienced guides or take a bushwalk and uncover the secrets only seen on foot. The camp is eco friendly and built with minimal impact on the environment. The main area runs on solar power and has other eco-initiatives. There is a pool to enjoy in the hot summer afternoons.
Deteema Springs is an ecofriendly camp and is elevated on decks to enhance the views from every angle. Each of the authentic safari tents is powered by solar with windows in the canvas to enjoy the views. Each luxury tent is ensuite and has a private deck area to watch the wildlife come and go. There is a family tent here and children are welcome.
Days 04 to 07 – Verney’s Camp
You will enjoy a game drive through Hwange to Verney’s Camp, in the heart of the park, away from the main tourist areas. Nestled along the edge of a teak forest, Verney’s overlooks a highly productive waterhole. The camp is in a private concession within Hwange which allows for night drives and bush walks as well as daily game drives. Expect to see excellent lion sightings, large herds of elephants and buffalo as well as leopards and cheetah. During the summer months, the birdlife is excellent in this part of Hwange.
Verney’s Camp is an eco-friendly luxurious tented camp with just 10 tents, 2 of which are for families. The tents are nestled under teak trees and overlook the active waterhole. Each tent is raised on a platform with private viewing decks, a sitting area and ensuite bathrooms. The main camp has a swimming pool and boma for al fresco dining.
At the end of your stay on this Classic Hwange Safari, you will be transferred to the airstrip and take a light air flight back to Victoria Falls Airport for your onward travel.
