Day by Day itinerary
Days 01 to 04 – Time+Tide Kakuli Bush Camp
On arrival in Lusaka, you will board a flight to the Mfuwe Airport, the gateway to South Luangwa. Your guide will be waiting to transfer you through the small town and farms on the way to the park. Cross the Luangwa River and drive through to the camp. This is your first game drive on this Highlights of Zambia safari! The drive will take about 2 hours unless of course, you spot some wildlife.
Perched high above a sweeping curve of the Luangwa River, Time+Tide Kakuli Bush Camp is located in an area well known for excellent game viewing and offers prolific leopard sightings. A nearby Carmine bee-eater colony will delight all, not just the avid birdwatchers. Each of the tented rooms makes the most of the sprawling views over the Luangwa, with indoor and outdoor showers and a private deck area. The front can be opened up to enjoy the views. Enjoy game drives and bush walks from Kakuli.
Important note: Kakuli is one of the few camps that is open from January through to April, to take advantage of the Emerald Season where the landscape is transformed by the rains. Boating safaris become the focal point as the Luangwa River is at its highest. The water also covers some lowlands, creating an incredibly unique experience of boating through a forest! The surrounding bush is lush and a verdant green. This time of year is many people’s most favourite to travel to Zambia.
Days 04 to 07 – Time+Tide Mchenja Bush Camp
You will walk the 4km distance from Kakuli bush camp to Mchenja bush camp at a leisurely pace. You can also drive the distance if walking is not your thing or it is too hot. Located under ebony trees that line the banks of the Luangwa River, Mchenja is in a superb location for game viewing, not to mention the views!
This is the more stylish of the bushcamps in South Luangwa. The rooms have large picture windows and the front can fully open to really enhance the wildlife feel, along with a private sitting area outside. The main area has a magical treehouse quality to it and the pool enjoys the same great views. Night drives are available and it is on these that you can spot the elusive nocturnal species. Spend your days tracking big cats, spotting colourful birds and everything else this spectacular region has to offer safari goers.
Days 07 to 11 – Time+Tide Chongwe River Camp
You will transfer back to Mfuwe airport before boarding a charter flight to the Lower Zambezi National Park. You will spend 4 nights at the delightful Chongwe River Camp. Located just outside the national park, Chongwe is in a game management area at the confluence of where the Chongwe River joins the Zambezi River. Soak up the beautiful views over the river and the escarpment. The game of the area is very productive and elephants are regular visitors in camp.
The biggest attraction of staying at Chongwe River Camp, aside from the glorious views, of course, is the myriad of activities you can enjoy while staying here. Spend time on day and night drives in the local game area and into the national park, or even spend the day in the national park kitted out with a full picnic lunch. Motorised boat trips on the Zambezi, canoeing on both the Zambezi and the Chongwe Rivers. Catch and release fishing is available to try your hand at catching the tigerfish and more. Walking safaris can be enjoyed at Chongwe, through the foothills of the Zambezi escarpment.
On your last day, you will fly back to Lusaka Airport for your onward travel.
